lyrics

Writing for making a spirit worthy; to be recited on the first of the month

Re appears in his horizon, his Ennead following after him; the god issues from the secret place, and trembling falls on the eastern horizon of the sky at the voice of Nut; she clears the ways for Re before the Oldest One, who turns about. Raise yourself, O Re who are in your shrine, that you may lap up the breezes. May you swallow the north wind, may you swallow the spine, may you entrap the day, may you kiss Maat, may you divide your suite, may you sail the Sacred Bark to the Lower Sky, may the Elders run to and fro at your voice; may you reckon up your bones, may you gather your members together, may you turn your face to the beautiful West, may you return anew every day, for you are that golden image which bears the likeness of the sun-disc, the sky being possessed with trembling at your recurrence every day. The horizon is joyful, and there is acclamation within your bounds.

As for the gods who are in the sky who behold N, they have offered up praise as though to Re, for N is a great one who seeks out the Wereret-crown of Re and reckons up his needs; N is one alone whose affairs flourish in that first company of those who are in the presence of Re; N is hale on earth and in the realm of the dead, N is hale like Re every day, N will run and will not tire in this land for ever. How happy are those who see with their eyes and who hear truth with their ears as Re and who ply the oar in the suite of Nun! N will not tell what he has seen nor will he repeat what he has heard of the secret matters, and there is acclamation for N. The god's body of Re crosses the Abyss among those who propitiate the will of the god with what he has desired, and N is a falcon whose shape is great.

To be spoken over a Sacred Bark of four cubits' length made of pieces of malachite, and having upon it the tribunal of the nomes. There shall be made a sky with stars purified with natron and incense. Make an image of Re with ochre in a new bowl placed in front of this bark, and put an image of this spirit which you desire to be made worthy within this bark; it means that he will sail in the Bark of Re, and that Re himself will see him in it. This spirit will be deemed worthy in the heart of Re, he will be caused to have power over the Ennead, and they will be with him; the gods will see him as one of themselves, the dead will see him, and they will fall on their faces when he is seen in the realm of the dead by means of the rays of the sun.
