Spell for Erecting a Bier You are the Lion, you are the Double Lion, you are Horus the protector of his father, you are the fourth of these four mighty gods who belong to those who make acclamation and who make shouting, who bring water by means of their power of ... Raise yourself upon your right side, lift yourself upon your left side, for Geb will open for you your blind eyes, he will straighten your bent knees, and there will be given to you your heart which you had from your mother, your heart which belongs to your body. Your soul is bound for the sky, your corpse is beneath the ground; there is bread for your belly, water for your throat and sweet air for your nose. Those who are in your tombs will be kindly to you, those who are in their coffins will be open to you, they will bring to you your members when you are re-established in your original shape. You shall go up to the sky, the cord shall be knotted for you in the presence of Re, you shall close the net in the river, you shall drink water from it, you shall walk on your feet, you shall not walk upside down. You shall ascend to those who are above the earth, you shall not go out to those who are under the walls; your walls which belong to you, being what your city god made for you, will not be thrown down. You are pure, your front is pure, your back parts are clean by means of natron, fresh water and incense, and your are pure by means of milk of Apis, by beer of Tjenmyt, and by natron which dispels the evil on you. Tefnut the daughter of Re will feed you in the presence of her father Re; She of the Valley will knit you together as at the burial of her father Osiris, you will bite on something sweet which he gives to you there. Your three portions are above with Re, of barley of Ibu; your four portions are below with Geb, of barley of Upper Egypt; it is the citizens who bring to you Him of the Field of Offerings, and he is set before you. You shall go forth with Re, you shall have power through Re, you shall have power in your legs at all seasons and at any hour. You shall not be examined, you shall not be imprisoned, you shall not be watched, you shall not be fettered, you shall not be put in the cells for rebels, the sand shall be removed from your face. O N, entrap all those who would harm you, for you have life, your soul has health, your corpse is long-enduring, you see flame, you breathe the air, your vision is clear in the House of Darkness which is set in the entrance (of the sky), without seeing a stornm. You serve the ruler of the Two Lands, you refresh yourself at the meru-tree in ther presence of him whose magic is mighty, while Seshat sits before you, Sia protects your body, the Ox-herd milks for you his herd which follows Sekhat-Hor. May you raise yourself at the opening of the waters Kheraha, may the great ones of Pe and Dep praise you, may you gaze on Thoth the representative of Re in the sky, may you go up and enter into the pillared hall, may the Rivals make report to you. Your ka is with you because of your joy of heart at your existing. Your happy ... awaken you, the Ennead makes your heart glad; four loaves are issued to you in Letopolis, four loaves in Hermopolis and four loaves in Heliopolis upon the altar of the Lady of the Two Lands. May the night of stars awaken you, may the Lords of Heliopolis refresh you, may food be in your mouth, for your feet shall not go astray, your limbs shall have life, you shall grasp a whip in Abydos; you shall guide the collection of the great ones, the full muster of those who are in charge of the company at the jubilee of Osiris at the morning of the Wag-festival, and of the masters of the mysteries. You shall be adorned with gold, your vestment being of fine linen, Hapi shall surge over your breast, the seter-plant will be beneficial to you, being carved on your offering-stone, and you shall drink beside the Lake of the Two Knives. The gods who are yonder shall favour you, you shall ascend to the sky with the gods who present the Truth to Re, you shall be inducted into the presence of the Ennead, and you shall be made like one of them. Yours is the khar-goose, son of the ro-goose, and you shall offer it to Ptah South-of-his-Wall.

Spell for Assembling a Bier O N, I have given you your flesh, I have gathered you bones together for you, I have collected your members for you, I have thrown off for you the earth which was on your flesh, for you are Horus within the Egg. Raise yourself that you may see the gods, extend you arm towards the horizon, to the pure place where you desire to be. May men serve you there, may acclamation be made for you, with what is issued from the altar. Horus will raise you up at his appearings, just as he did for Him who was in the Pure Place. O N, Anubis who is on his mountain will raise you up and will make your bandages strong. O N, Ptah-Sokar will give you an arm with its temple adornments. O N, Thoth himself will come to you with the book of the sacred words, and he will set your hand on the horizon, at the place which your ka desires; he it was who helped you, O Osiris, on that night of death. May your White Crown be firm on your brow, for Shesmu is with you, and he will present you with the choicest of fowl. O N, raise yourself on your bier that you may go forth. Re will raise you up in the horizon, to the bank of rowers which is in his Bark. O N, Atum, father of the gods, will cause you to endure for ever. O N, Min of Coptos will raise you up so that gods of the shrine may worship you. O N, how happy a thing it is that you should cross in peace to your house for eternity, your tomb for everlasting! May you be greeted in Pe and Dep in the shrine which your ka desires, for your place is pre-eminent and your power is great. The great bier will raise you up to the Wild Bull whome the gods embrace, for you are a god who begot those who exist, whose shape is better than those of the gods. Your brilliance is greater than that of the spirits, your power is mightier than that of those who are yonder. O N, Ptah South-of-his-Wall will raise you up and will advance your position above that of the gods. O N, you are Horus, son of Isis, whom Ptah begot, whom Nun created; may you shine like Re in the horizon when he illumines the Two Lands with his beauty. The gods say to you: 'Welcome! Cross over that you may see your possessions in your house for eternity.' Renenutet will raise you up, even she whom Atum impregnated in the presence of the Ennead. O Nut, I am the heir of the sky, the companion of Him who created his light; I went forth from the womb when I was orphaned of my father without having the wisdom to answer for my deeds.

Rise up against those who would harm you, male or female, for your enemies are fallen; Ptah has felled your enemies, and you are victorious over them, you have power over them. Your words are heard, orders are carried out for you, for you are risen and vindicated in the tribunals of every god or goddess. See, you are doubly mourned. Second stanza. Your head, O my lord, is adorned with the tress of a woman of Asia; your face is brighter than the Mansion of the Moon; your upper part is lapis-lazuli; your hair is blacker than all the doors of the Netherworld on the day of darkness, your hair is bestrewn with lapis-lazuli; the upper part of your face is as the shining of Re; your visage is covered with gold and Horus has inlaid it with lapis-lazuli; your eyebrows are the two sisterly Serpents, and Horus has inlaid them with lapis-lazuli; your nose is in the odour of the place of embalming, your nostrils are like the winds of the sky; your eys behold Bakhhu; your eyelashes are firm every day, being coloured with real lapis-lazuli; your eyelids are the bringers of peace, and teir corners are full of black eye-paint; your lips give you truth, they repeat truth to Re and make the gods content; your teeth are those of the Coiled Serpent, with which the Two Horuses play; your tongue is wise and sharp when you speak to the kites of the field; your jaw is the starry sky; your breasts are firm in their place when they traverse the western desert. See, you are doubly mourned. Third stanza. Your neck is adorned with gold and also with fine gold; your throat is great, your windpipe is Anubis; your vertebrae are the two Cobras; your back is overlaid with gold and also with fine gold; your lungs are Nephthys; your face is Hapi and his flood; your buttocks are eggs of cornelian; your legs are strong in walking; you are seated on your throne, and the gods have given you your eyes. See, you are doubly mourned. Fourth stanza. Your gullet is Anubis; your body is extended with gold; your breasts are eggs of cornelian which Horus has inlaid with lapis-lazuli; your arms glitter with faience; your shoulders are firm in their places; your heart is happy every day; your heart is the work of the two Mighty Ones; your thighs worship the lower stars, your belly is the peaceful sky; your navel is the Morning Star which makes judgement and promises light in darkness, and whose offerings are the "life-is-in-it" plant; it worships the Majesty of Thoth. I love its beauty in my tomb which my god decreed for me in the pure place where I desire to be. See, you are doubly mourned. Fifth stanza. Your arms are a waterway at the fair season of inundation, a waterway which the Children of Water have covered; your knees are enclosed with gold; your breast is a thicket of the swampts; the soles of your feet are firm every day; your toes guide you on fair paths, O N; your hands are the reeds in the water-basins; your fingers are picks of gold and their nails are knives of flint in the faces of those who would harm you. See, you are doubly mourned. Sixth stanza. You don the pure garment, you discard the thick cloth, you rise up from the bier, the foreleg is cut off for your ka, O N, the heart is for your mummy, you receive the loin-cloth of fine linen from the hands of the messenger of Re; you eat bread upon a cloth woven by Tayt herself; you eat the foreleg, you devour the haunch. Re glorifies you in his pure abode; you wash your feet in bowls of silver fashioned by the craft of Sokar, while you eat the shens-bread which was issued from the altar; the two God's-Fathers make presentation, and you eat persen-bread prepared in the cooking-vessel of the storehouse; in the fear of your heart you chew onions from your offering-stone; the nurse-baboons prepare for you the provisions and food of the Souls of Heliopolis, who themselves bear food to you; fowl and fish are promised to you to be at your feet in the portals of the Great Mansion. You raise up Orion, your hinder-parts reach to the sky; and her hands are on you. That is what Orion said, even he the son of Nut who bore the gods. The two Great Gods of the sky said the one to the other: 'Take on your shoulder him whom I have brought on my shoulder and let us help N on this happy day. May he be glorified, may he be remembered, even he who will be in the mouths of all children.' Raise yourself and listen to your praises in the mouths of all your household. See, you are doubly mourned. Seventh stanza. May Anubis embalm you, for he has acted on behald of one whom he has favoured. May the Greatest of the Sers make presentation of his clothing when you go to bathe in the Lake of Perfection, for he is the butler of the Great God. May you make offerings in the Upper Houses, may you propitiate the Lords of Heliopolis, may you present to Re water in a vase and two large jars of milk. May your offering be raised up on the altar; may your fee be washed on a stone of ... on the slab of the God of the Lake; may you ascend and see Re on the supporting posts of the sky, on the head of Pillar-of-his-Mother, and on the shoulders of Wepwawet; may he open a path for you that you may see the horizon, the pure place where you desire to be. See, you are doubly mourned. Eighth stanza. Offerings are divided up for you in the presence of Re. You have your front part, you have your back part, being what Horus and Thoth decreed for you. They have summoned you, and you see that whereby you become a spirit. It is caused that the god goes up to you in the neighbourhood of the Souls of Heliopolis; may you proceed on the paths, great in your dignity of one who receives the offerings of your father who was before you, being clad in fine linen every day and being guided by the god to the portals of the Great Mansion. See, you are doubly mourned. Ninth stanza. As for N, there is air for him, air for his nose, air for his nostrils; a thousand geese and fifty baskets of everything good and pure. Your enemies have fallen and shall exist no longer, O N.
